What Makes Geothermal Different

An air-source system has to pull heat from air that is 95 degrees in July and 25 degrees in January. A geothermal system works against ground temperatures that stay far more stable all year, which is the whole basis of the efficiency advantage.

Buried piping circulating fluid that exchanges heat with the earth. Closed loop is the common configuration; open loop draws on well water where the site supports it. Layout can be horizontal or vertical depending on available land.

It depends on which loop configuration the site supports. A horizontal loop is trenched and needs more open ground, while a vertical loop is bored and fits properties where land is limited. Part of what we do during the site assessment is determine which layout your lot, soil and water table will actually accommodate.

The buried loop is the long-lived part of the system and typically outlasts the indoor equipment by a wide margin. That means a future replacement is usually just the unit inside, not the loop, which changes the economics of the second system considerably compared with the first.
