The same unit has to heat in January and cool in July, switching modes through a reversing valve that has no equivalent in a furnace or straight air conditioner. Blowing cold air when it should be heating. Start with heat pump repair. That symptom points at the reversing valve, refrigerant charge or defrost cycle.
The outdoor unit is encased in ice. A little frost in cold weather is normal and clears on its own. Ice covering the whole unit is a defrost system fault worth diagnosing.
Electric bills climbed sharply this winter. Often the backup heat strips are carrying load they should not be, which is a control or capacity issue rather than normal operation.
The system is aging and you are weighing options. Compare a new heat pump against geothermal, which moves the heat exchange underground and removes the outdoor unit entirely.
These four components exist only because the equipment has to run in both directions. They are also where most heat pump service calls end up, and where experience with the technology shows.

The component that flips the system between heating and cooling. When it sticks or its solenoid fails, you get cooling when you asked for heat, or a unit that will not change modes at all.
In heating mode the outdoor coil collects frost by design, and the system periodically reverses to melt it. Failed sensors or controls leave the unit iced over and the heating capacity gone.
Electric resistance heat that supplements the system on the coldest days. Sequencer faults or a heat pump that is underperforming leave the strips running far more than they should, and the bill shows it.
Systems paired with a furnace hand off between the two at a set outdoor temperature. Set that point wrong and you either burn gas unnecessarily or run the heat pump past where it is efficient.
